Unjust promotions
Maltacom employees who recently received a
promotion yesterday admitted that they had not been given a letter of appointment to
inform them of their new responsibilities.
The employees were testifying in a court hearing after the General Workers Union
requested a prohibitory injunction to stop the promotions going through.
The union said that Kristinu Sant, Mario Mamo, Charles Vassallo, Josephine Agius and
Vincent Bonanno had all been given unjust promotions which were in breach of the
conditions of the last collective agreement.
The five workers said they received salaries ranging between Lm5,422 and Lm6,482 per year.
With the promotions, they were to receive Lm9,500 per year.
Maltacom chairman Maurice Zarb Adami testified yesterday and said that on 29 May the
Maltacom board of directors decided to award the promotions to the five employees who were
to form the Users Liaison Centre to deal with customer care.
The chairman admitted that those who were to be given the promotions did in fact fall
under the conditions of the collective agreement. The witness also said that those who
were to form the unit had experience in that section.
Mr Zarb Adami also admitted that the company had only informed the employees verbally and
not in writing. He also said that the promotions procedures had not been effected up to
that point.
Dr Aron Mifsud Bonnici appeared for the General Workers Union while Dr Joe Galea
Debono appeared for Maltacom. |
